The two artists selected for this award in 2020 are now coming to the end of their residency here. Max Whetter and Jane Howard both full committed to developing their practice after their graduation, and whole heartedly embraced their Krowji studio space. We asked them how they have enjoyed their experience here.
“The space is great, somewhere I’ve really been able to continue with my practice. I’ve invested my time on the studio award with a focus on building up a body of work. Having the space means I’ve been able to work bigger, and allowed me to work on multiple paintings. Krowji is full of friendly creative people that have helped boost my confidence and I’ve been made to feel part of the community. I would like to be able to start exhibiting my work and I’m hoping to continue working from Krowji after the award is finished.”
“Having a space at Krowji has been an amazing experience, it gives me both the physical and mental space to work through, explore and execute ideas. It’s also quite comforting and supportive to know you’re among a like minded creative community, with whom you can share experiences, and advice. A really great transition from university life to professional practice.”
It is wonderful for us to then see their practice develop and the foundations of a career in the creative sector be consolidated. We have had a number of years working with Cornwall College on this program. Previous winners include artists Ben Harris, Bettina Holland, Jo Reed, Mel Johns, Vicki Aimers, Vanessa Penrose, Carol Weir and Sarah Cooling have all since taken on their own studios here at Krowji. You can see all of the previous award winners here.
