This is Not a Safe Space exhibition follows on from the forum of the same name which was held at Archives and Cornish Studies Service in October 2023. The exhibition gathers and presents materials from the day’s activities and acts as a visual representation of the forum.
The forum was constructed in order to flip the conversation from placing responsibility on marginalised communities to increase inclusion and equity. This approach was developed after one-to-one sessions with many of Cornwall’s community group leaders who are often called on for unpaid labour in order to address inequality which can lead to burn out. Therefore the forum was an active environment for questions rather than a passive learning experience.
This is Not a Safe Space is a provocation and an active forum, driven by Cornwall’s grassroots and community-based organisation to arrive at a creative manifesto for change for Cornwall. By titling the event in this way we address the question of a safe space at the door- who is this space safe for? This exhibition makes physical this provocation.
This show is being led by CMP’s Creative Producer for Change, SHARP the Artist.
