An introduction to Cerisia Ta’Torin…

My Art

My work is a combination of illustration and fine art. Childlike and playful, full of imagination, so my pieces are very whimsical, loose and primitive. There’re often character lead, with a feel of a story, and have a touch of melancholy. I use mixed media and layering as part of my process, acrylic paints, pencil, papers, wax crayons, watercolour crayons, charcoal and just about anything else I can get my hands on, will all be added to the canvas.  I’m very curious about the world and like to take it all in. I am very much a country bumpkin so the natural world is a big influence for me. I love the wildness, feelings of being in big empty spaces surrounded by nature at its best, is a healing creative space for me.

Career Development

In 2020 when lockdown began I had some time to really think about my creative business, where I wanted it to go and what the future may look like. I then began using this time to develop my understanding of business which was very small at that point. I started to recognise that as an artist it’s not so easy to survive and flourish without understanding that you also need to be a business. Recently I had an opportunity to be apart of Cultivators creative and cultural leadership development program. To develop a role as a leader and to contribute to the creative economy of Cornwall and Isles of silly. The program is led by Cultivator’s partners at the University of Plymouth and I became part of the first team of cohort one.

Also over the last 6 months I have been working with expert poet, author and tutor Alison Howlett on my new illustrated poetry book. I received funding through Cultivator to have a mentor who has helped me edit down and iron out my recent work. I am currently having my first illustrated Poetry book published through Austin Macauley publisher which will be out this year.

What’s on my desk now

Over the coming weeks you will be able to find me in my studio working on my ‘Picnic on the green’ series of mixed media illustrative primitive paintings, and beginning the process of illustrating my new poetry book. My studio is open for visits via appointment. There is no obligation to buy, but if you fancy coming to have a look and a lovely chat about my work, please drop me an email. [email protected]
