Creative Kernow, based at Krowji, is the umbrella organisation for the following projects. Together we support the production, promotion and distribution of work by creative practitioners in Cornwall because we believe in creativity's transformative power and want more people to benefit from it.

Holly Smith

Holly Cecilia Smith is an English artist living and working in Cornwall. Raised in England and shaped early by the discipline of competitive swimming, her life was marked by repetition, endurance, and the quiet pursuit of measurable goals. Only later did the deeper presence of England as an island, never far from the sea, begin to rise within her work.

Drawn toward a longer horizon, she left England, learned another language, and stepped into a different culture. Europe’s closeness, its constant nearness of elsewhere, sparked a restless desire to move. For two years, she travelled, her feet tracing paths that gradually unfolded into a new visual language.

She first studied History of Art in Munich, before continuing in Sculpture at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe. Her practice now holds two languages at once: one restrained and hushed, the other vivid, painterly, and in motion. Like bilingual thought, these modes speak of a life shaped between places; between stillness and movement, achievement and enjoyment.

Returning to Cornwall at a moment of intense decision-making, she found space to breathe. The land and the sea offered a sense of wonder and return, revealing that to stay, to grow roots, can be an act as expansive as leaving.

Her practice is an inward, all-consuming attention to the everyday: the spaces we inhabit, move through, and often overlook. Rather than seeking to be loud, the work reflects our presence within place, tracing journeys through environments and the subtle shifts that occur along the way. Walking, travelling alone, hiking, and following trails are central to how she lives and sees; these acts of movement become the foundation of her observation.

Conceptual works emerge through listening, often mistaken for daydreaming, and are made with materials that ask for little deliberation: tape, card, stamps, and stencils. Smith notices rhythms in human behaviour and plays with niche ideas, finding quiet humour in the seriousness of sport, traffic systems, café interiors, and the habitual paths we walk to work. There is an enjoyment in over analysis, in uncovering the silliness embedded within order and routine.

Alongside this, a painterly language watches carefully. She over-familiarises herself with a landscape, from every angle, until it becomes vivid enough to paint from memory. Drawn to the precise moment where sea and sky meet, pretending, almost convincingly, not to know one another, she paints the quiet drama of the horizon. And then she, too, will go for a quick float.
