Daisy Culmer

Having grown up in West Penwith, I am inspired by the unique culture and landscape of these rural, far-western reaches of our county; megaliths, moorland, working fishing villages, granite outcrops and Cornish folklore feature prominently in my work.

I am also a Museum Curator in Hayle. In this role, I have nurtured my interest in Cornwall’s rich industrial heritage, caring for a growing collection of objects and archival material, and sharing the remarkable stories they tell through exhibitions and community outreach work. This storytelling, as well as my specialism in collections management (the intricate care of ‘things’ through transparent cataloguing, ethical co-curation, appropriate storage, and public accessibility) is imbedded in my artistic practice, as is the subject matter of our county’s historic mining and engineering prowess which, though geographically remote, saw Cornwall achieve international renown.

My artistic practice explores these images and ideas and their relationship to the concept of ‘home’ through mixed-media collages, monotypes, experimental drawings, and other works on paper. I am interested in how the inclusion of text ‘fragments’ (short strung, poignant sentences) can evoke the feeling of a place – what it instils in me – whether that’s nostalgia or melancholy.
