Fellow makers and mentees Tanya Krzyswinska and Michelle Ohlson are working alongside me in studio G08.
Reflecting on my making at this point, I can identify a brutal societal force that drives the theme of my current body of work ‘emotional destruction of the self‘. Standing witness to such acts within my role as both a nurse and a social worker has fuelled my work to serve as a site for mourning and a memorial to the survivors.
I apply the process of conventional life drawing to engage and reconnect the self in close human observation. This practice embeds a rigorous discipline in my work, alongside the bringing together of multiple surfaces through layering, scratching and cutting. This uncompromising abrasive approach allows me to connect and access deep juxtaposed human emotions such as vulnerability, self-hatred and resilience. The immediacy of my internal voice is evidenced in the final form.
